摘要
The sensing mechanism of an optical-fiber bending sensor based on the interaction between the frequency-shifted two modes in a two-mode fiber with an off-center core is presented. When the fiber is bent, a tension or a compression field appears in the fiber which causes a preferential net strain due to the asymmetry induced by the off-center core. Both theoretical and experimental results show that the bending in a specific direction can be sensed. Approaches to enhance the sensitivity and the use of this sensor as an accelerometer are also provided. © 1994 IOP Publishing Ltd.
