The shear behavior of model soft joints is studied under constant normal stiffness conditions, with special reference to the influence of infill simulating the field conditions. Dry commercial bentonite is used as an infill material to simulate prototype joint interfaces. It is found that a small thickness of bentonite infill is sufficient to reduce the peak stress significantly. As expected, the peak shear stress almost approaches that of the shear strength of infill when the infill thickness to asperity height ratio reaches 1.60.
