The present study would be impossible without the galaxy redshift compilations sent us generously by Professor J. Peebles (a tape with the compilation of Dr H. Rood) and Dr J. Huchra. Several ideas used here were generated by fruitful discussions with Professor Ya. B. Zel'dovich. The search for quantitative methods to describe the structure of the Universe started during several visits: ES visted the Astronomy Department of Yale University in 1980;
JE and SS visited the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge (1980-81);
JE visited European Southern Observatory (1981-82);
and Astronomy Department of the University of California at Los Angeles (1983). We thank the staff of these institutions;
