The applicability of bacterial coal desulfurization to Turkish lignites and Nalligan-Cayirhan lignites was investigated in shake-flask culture systems. Effect of various parameters such as pulp density, particle size, type of inoculum, media and temperature on the efficiency of desulfurization by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were tested. A Thiobacillus related moderately thermophilic mixotroph was found to remove some of the organic sulfur as well.
