Chinese philosophy, although the concept “qi” has multitudinous meanings, it is not chaos. Generally speaking, “Oi” has several meanings on different levels including physics, physiology, psychology, ethnics and philosophy and so on. On the philosophical level, “Oi” is just similar to “air”, “matter-energy” or “field” in physics, meaning the origin or element engendering all things of the world and it is from this point that “Oi”s meanings of physiology, psychology, ethnics as well as aesthetics derive. This paper aims to analyze the meanings of “Oi” on five levels and especially to clarify the alleged “pan-vitalistic”, “conscious” and “pan-ethical” misunderstandings about “Oi”.
