The author concisely relates the history of sociolinguistics and Labov's contributions to it. He emphatically points out that it is the tradition of Chinese linguistics to hold that language and society are closely related to each other, and so sociolinguistics took its root deeply immediately after it was introduced in the 80's of the last century. Since then, macrosociolinguistics has been developing rapidly, whereas in microsociolinguistics there is much room for development.
