The present paper gives a bricf preliminary account of a collection of Pleistocene mammalian fossils collccted by Mr.C.Y.Wang in 1952 from thc cave deposits in thc District of Chihchin,Northwestern Kweichow. The specimens are partly found or “picked up” by Mr.Wang in thecaves and partly gathered from the local amateur collectors. Therefore, their stratigraphicalhorizons are uncertain. The following mammalian species or forms are identified, and presented in the collection:Soricidae, gen.et sp.indet.Petaurista cf.brachydusEpimys rattusMuridae, gen.et sp.indet.Micotinae,gen.et sp.indet.Hystrix sp.Ursus of.kokcniStegodon orientailsMegatapirus augustusRhinoceros of.sinensisEquus sp.Sus of.scrofaRusa unicolorMuntiacus sp.Bubalus sp.?Capricornis sp.From the above list it is evident that most,if not all,of these fossils belong to the widelydistributed Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna characterized the Middle Pleistocene of South China.TheKweichow fauna differs from those of Yenchinkou and other better known localities in theabsence of Ailuropoda,Primates,Hyaena and other carnivoras, and in the presence of Equus, asmall mustelid, etc. These differences are more probably resulted from random collecting ofmaterials.Although Pleistocene mammalian fossils were long known to occur in the cave deposits ofKweichow,so far almost nothing has been recorded in the paleontological literature. In thisrespect, the present brief account of the few available materials may serve to afford a basisfor further investigation.
