摘要：

史天健在他突然意外中断的学术生涯中,致力于探讨有关中国公民和中国政治发展的几个重要问题。第一,公民怎样来看待合理的政治格局以及制度的问题(合法性与政治信任);第二,公民如何看待自己在政治过程中的角色和作用(政治参与);第三,公民如何界定政府与公民之间,以及在不同类型的公民之间的权力划分(民主观念)。他发现中国和东亚社会的公民的价值观念和道德规范与西方的公民是截然不同的。在公民与政府的关系上,中国(和东亚)公民大体上采纳一种垂直权力关系的政治价值。在个人利益单元的界定上,中国(和东亚)公民比西方公民更接受范围更大的利益单元。史天健反对盲目追捧西方政治理念和制度设计,而一直致力于从实证上理解中国政治文化的特质,作为建立中国民主政治的客观基础。
