Many different social forces participated in the 1911 revolutionary movement. Among these,secret societies, mainly composed of lower social strata, played an important role. This article seeks to analyze some new psychological factors that explain their role. As, for example, their acceptance of revolutionaries as leaders, their will to consolidate the union between societies, their advocacy of democracy and republicanism, their anti - foreignism or their appeal to being civilized.
