With the post-Cold War declassification of government files,American diplomatic historians began the studies. of "new ColdWar history" . They stress "the diversification of forces" and theresearch on multinational files, investigate U. S. and Soviet waysof building their respective "empires, " bring to light Soviet re-sponsibility for the Cold War, demonstrate U. S. success in pursu-ing Realpolitik, and criticize some basic conclusions of the oldCold War history. It is significant, the author holds, to emphasizethe influence of the second and third worlds and the research onmultinational files, but the post-Cold War historians' view of theorigins of the Cold War, which highly praises the United States isa retrogression to the "orthodox" Cold War history.
