自迪韦尔热在其所著的《政党:在现代国家中的组织与活动》中提出群众党类型理论后,西方政治学界对这种政党类型进行广泛的研究与讨论。有些学者对迪韦尔热的群众党类型提出了批评意见。有些学者在对迪韦尔热理论的检验中,得出了与迪韦尔热不同的结论。尽管如此,仍有许多学者认为群众党类型有较强的适应性。他们发现即使在非西方国家和东欧转型后的政党中仍有符合迪韦尔热标准的群众党类型。
