我们回顾当前对燃烧矿物燃料引起大气二氧化碳(CO2)长期增长的认识。由于海洋对CO2的周转缓慢,一旦所估计的传统矿物燃料全部被烧完,大气将持有工业化前约3~4倍之多的CO2。需要几个世纪,大气与海洋的CO2才得以平衡。为了使大气回到工业化前的CO2水平,需要增加矿物的风化,这将需要好几千年。如果全部矿物燃料贮存都被烧掉,散发出来的CO2至多能被陆地生物圈(植被和土壤)移去1/3。由于CO2问题的极端长期的性质,我们提供一个情况,它足以使社会知道要开始采取步骤减少CO2的排放。我们还简要提出碳循环研究的议程。社会采取认真态度控制CO2的排放是很重要的,这就迫切需要我们加强对碳循环的认识;这方面的认识应该建立在几个真正独立的证据之上。
