China's domestic food supply was generally unaffected by the recent world food crisis, yet the crisis did serve as a reminder of the potency food plays in discussions about China's interactions with the rest of the world.China suffered from international food embargo in the 1960s,but since then has managed to maintain a high level of self-sufficiency in the basic food supply. As the country moves into the future, nonetheless, the goal of achieving over 90% self-sufficiency is facing challenges."Is the external food market a reliable alternative in times of need" remains a worthy question. For the scholarly community in China concerned with international politics,it is necessary not only to avoid dismissing as willful politicization foreign expressions of concern about China's food security, but also to guard against the temptation of linear logical reasoning,be it conspiracy theory or cooperation-serves-all arguments.
