This paper discusses the scope ambiguity of negation in Chinese paratactic sentences. It will reveal the cause of such scope ambiguity from the viewpoint of the linguistic typology of Chinese. Then the paper describes the guard markers which indicate the boundary of the scope of negation governed by the negative words in the precedent clauses of paratactic sentences. Finally, the paper shows some means of eliminating scope ambiguity in paratactic sentences, which could provide some practical linguistic guides for teaching paratactic sentences in teaching Chinese as a second language.
