Technique for measuring the distributed zero dispersion wavelength of optical fibres using idler pulse generation caused by modulation instability

摘要
A novel method of measuring the distributed zero dispersion wavelength (lambda(o)) along the length of a fibre is proposed: it uses the dispersion dependent idler pulse generation induced by modulation instability. The lambda(o) distribution of a 10km fibre is successfully measured without cutting the fibre into short pieces. The measured distribution is compared with the average values of each span as measured using the conventional cutback method.
