Collision narrowing and speed dependent effect on broadening in vibration rotation line profiles perturbed by different buffer gases up to one atmosphere-difficulties in these analyses coming from the quality of the tunable diode laser emission

Different tunable diode lasers (TDL), tightly controlled by a Michelson interferometer, have been used to study precisely the evolution of absorption line profiles when the pressure increases. For this purpose the spectral intensity distribution within each given TDL mode has been determined by comparing the observed spectrum of a narrow absorption line at very low pressure (Doppler line) with a calculated spectrum, convolution product of the TDL intensity distribution with the exact absorption line shape precisely described by a Gauss profile. Examples of confinement narrowing and absorber speed dependent effect are given with CO or HCl in different buffer gases (N-2, He, Ne, Ar and Xe) and the line parameters have been deduced taking into account the intensity distribution of the TDL emission.
