摘要：

The assessment of technical dexterity is currently the weakest aspect of surgical skills assessment. There are several new and emerging techniques of assessment that between them offer the potential for improvement across the board. With regard to the establishment of a comprehensive assessment, we have advanced a simple model of care, and of technical performance, in particular. We suggest that the most robust and safest assessments will emerge from a multimodal process in which several measures are made in different ways before arriving at a final answer.
