A comparison of discrete element model predictions to observations of metal powder consolidation

摘要
In this study, simulation was carried out to critically evaluate the discrete element method (DEM) for modeling deformation and consolidation behavior during uniaxial compression, die pressing, and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of Ti-14Al-21Nb and Ti-6Al-4V metal powder compacts (64%-90% relative density). The accuracy of the simulation predictions was established via comparison with experimental measurements of the flow stress and Poisson's ratio during uniaxial upsetting of Ti-14Al-21Nb powder compacts of various relative densities and detailed microstructural data from HIP trials for Ti-6Al-4V.
