Parkinson's disease and sleep

Patients with Parkinson's disease have sleep difficulties, not only difficulty falling or remaining asleep, but also excessive daytime sleepiness and abnormal events during sleep. The clinical features of Parkinson's disease tend to overshadow sleep difficulties, but they can be as disrupting as motor symptoms. As patients age, the likelihood of sleep disturbance increases; not only are sleep disturbances associated with the primary disorder but also they are made worse by underlying sleep problems associated with aging. Recognition and management of sleep issues require in-depth assessment because of the myriad of possible sleep disorders; assessing and treating them can improve overall health, quality of life, and psychologic well-being.
