Quasi-two-level Er3+:Y3Al5O12 laser for the 1.6-μm range

摘要
The interaction of Er ions in the I-4(13/2) excited state in YAG crystals has been studied. It is established that the up-conversion rate parameter in the range of Er concentrations 1-25 at. % varies linearly from 0.5 X 10(-17) to 18 X 10(-17) sec(-1) cm(3). The effect of up-conversion on the efficiency of the Er:YAG laser is discussed. An efficient laser based on a YAG:Er crystal (1 at. %) has been created that lases at 1.64 mum with longitudinal pump radiation from an Yb-Er glass laser (1.532 mum). For a pump energy of 55 mJ, an energy of 15 mJ is obtained in the free-lasing regime, and 5 mJ in the Q-switched regime. (C) 2001 The Optical Society of America.
