Multilayer organic light-emitting diodes

Organic electroluminescent devices are light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in which the active components are entirely organic in nature. In this work, heterostructural LEDs composed of conjugated conducting polymer poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) layer, fluorescent molecular compound tris(8-hydroxy) quinoline aluminum (Alq(3)) layer, and 2-(4'tert-Butylphenyl)-5-(4''-Biphenyl)-1,3,4- (PBD) layer were designed and fabricated. The shape of its electroluminescence spectra is independent of bias and the light originates almost exclusively from the PBD layer. The results suggest that the neutral excitons are formed in the Alq(3) layer, rather than at the PPV/Alq(3) interface. The introduction of PBD can balance the transport of holes and electrons and improves the efficiency, although the turn-on voltage should be higher.
