Using a sol-gel process for the fabrication of surface-enhanced Raman scattering active substrates

Silver-coated substrates have been fabricated for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) by using a sol-gel process and a chemical reduction method. The sol-gel technique was applied to pre-coat titania or magnia onto glass slides for creating an appropriate uniform and rough surface structure. The number of coating layers and the chemical reduction time were optimized. The performance of the silver/titania and silver/magnia substrates has been tested using millimolar solutions of benzoic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid, p-nitrobenzoic acid, p-nitrophenol, and p-nitroaniline as samples. The possible undercoating effect on the adsorption behavior of p-aminobenzoic acid, p-nitrophenol and p-nitroaniline was also investigated. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
