Magnetic circular x-ray dichroism in transverse geometry: A new tool to study the magnetocrystalline anisotropy

The orbital and spin magnetic moments in 3d transition metals are no longer collinear when the electron spins are forced out of their easy direction by an applied magnetic field. This effect provides a new way to measure the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment using magnetic circular x-ray dichroism in a geometry where the photon helicity vector is perpendicular to the magnetization direction. As an experimental corroboration we studied the magnetic anisotropy in the Co orbital moment of a Co/Pt multilayer. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.
