This paper aims toward a better integration of the sociology of culture and the sociology of religion in the study of American Catholicism. It discusses Catholicism as a cultural discourse, the concept of ideological structures, and the implications of a cultural approach for Warner's ''new paradigm'' and rational choice theory.
