Experimental observation of the splitting of single photons by a beam splitter

摘要
It was recently predicted that any metallic beam splitter must have a small probability of splining a single photon into a pair of secondary photons, conserving energy in the process. This nonlinear effect is a consequence of the quantization of the field and is somewhat analogous to other nonlinear effects in QED. The splitting of single photons by a metallic beam splitter has now been observed experimentally and is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
