Sonolysis is an effective technique of destroying a variety of organic compounds in an aqueous solution. In sonolysis, the organic pollutant is destroyed either by direct pyrolysis in the cavitation bubble or by free radical attacks in the interfacial region and in the bulk solution. The objective of this study is to examine the technical feasibility of the sonochemical process for the destruction of organic contaminants. Trichloroethylene (TCE) was chosen as the model organic compound and batch experiments were conducted employing a microprocessor controlled 20 kHz ultrasound source. This paper presents results on the effect of the following parameters on reaction rate: bicarbonate concentration (1-1000 mM), metal/metal oxide concentration (0.01-100 g/L), metal/metal oxide (0.01-0.1 g/L) in presence of hydrogen peroxide (1 mM), and solution pH.
