Surface integrity generated by precision hard turning

摘要
Rolling contact fatigue tests were conducted to find the effect of precision hard turning. The tests showed that hard turning provides as good a fatigue performance as grinding. Hard turning produces compressive residual stresses in a deep subsurface, which contribute to a long fatigue life. The effect of cutting parameters on residual stress was investigated in order to find why deep residual stresses are created. It was determined that the tool edge geometry is the dominant factor deciding the residual stress profile.
