Numerical modelling of the thermal internal boundary-layer evolution using Athens field experimental data

The Boundary Layer Transformation Model (BLTM) is tested against data on the observed depth of the thermal internal boundary layer (TIBL). The model is based on a semi-empirical theory of the atmospheric boundary layer and takes into account the influence of the sea-land temperature difference and other meteorological conditions during the TIBL development. The measurements were carried out during ATHens Internal Boundary Layer EXperiment (ATHIBLEX) in 1989 and 1990. It is found that the BLTM results are in good qualitative agreement with the observed TIBL depths. The reason for the discrepancies between the observed and computed depths is explained by the different definitions of the TIBL adopted.
