An ultrathin two-dimensional polymer film adsorbed on an iron surface was prepared by modification of an 11-mercapto-1-undecanol HS(CH2)(11)OH monolayer with 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (C2H5O)(3)Si(CH2)(2)Si(OC2H5)(3) and subsequently with octadecyltriethoxysilane C18H37Si(OC2H5)(3). The him was characterized by X-ray photoelectron and FTIR reflection spectroscopy, and contact angle measurement. The protective efficiency of this film, determined by polarization and impedance measurements of an iron electrode in an aerated 0.5 M NaCl solution, was markedly high (98.1%). X-ray photoelectron spectra of the iron surface coated with this film after exposure to indoor air for 60 days revealed protection against atmospheric corrosion of iron.
