New findings on the phase transitions in Li1-xNiO2:: in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies

A synchrotron X-ray source was used for in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies on a Li1-xNiO2 cathode in the transmission mode. New phase transitions, different from those published in the literature, were observed. When a Li \ LiNiO2 cell was charged at the C/13 and C/84 rates in the 3.5 to 5.1 V range, there were two first-order phase transitions. with all three phases having a hexagonal structure. These new findings question the interpretation of XRD patterns used in the literature as evidence for monoclinic phase formation in this system during charge. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A.
