Simulation of an inert membrane reactor for the oxidative dehydrogenation of butane

A model is presented for the simulation of an inert membrane reactor far the oxidative dehydrogenation of butane over V/MgO catalysts. For the first time, the simulation includes the effect of oxygen distribution through the membrane on the state of the catalyst, by means of kinetic parameters that relate the activities of selective and non-selective sites on the catalyst surface. This allows to explain the differences observed experimentally in the conversion-selectivity behaviour of fixed beds and inert membrane reactors. The beneficial effect of oxygen distribution to improve reactor safety acid operability is also examined. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
