Application of electron backscattered diffraction to cleavage fracture in duplex stainless steel

Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) was used to study cleavage fracture and crystal texture in age-hardened duplex stainless steels (DSS). The material investigated was the super DSS, Zeron 100, age hardened at 475 °C to a hardness of 361 VHN to induce brittle behavior. This DSS has a ferrite matrix with elongated austenite. Texture in two phase DSS can be measured with high resolution using EBSD. Cleavage planes in bulk samples can be identified by the use of EBSD and trace analysis. Cleavage of ferrite in a DSS occurs along {001} planes and {112} twin habit planes.
