Focused on Italy, this study concerns the narrow link existing between man and the sweet chestnut. The history, culture and anthropology linked to the chestnut are examined. The article includes the following chapters: introduction, from Asia Minor to the Romans; from the Middle Ages to the modern history; from the XIXth to the XXth century; the third millennium.
