Physiologic specialization of Puccinia hordei in Israel and Ecuador, 1992-1994

Studies on leaf rust of barley, (Puccinia hordei) in Israel and Ecuador during 1992-94 have demonstrated that in both countries the virulence spectrum of the pathogen is broad and diverse. Isolates were identified that were virulent to all of the standard Pa genes. Some isolates surmounted protection conferred by genes Pa3 (cv. Estate) and Pa7 (cv. Cebada Capa). Most of the Israeli isolates had a broader range of virulence than those from Ecuador. Amongst the isolates from Ecuador, four were avirulent on all the differentials tested. In Israel, however, no completely avirulent isolates were found. Two isolates from Israel were virulent to all 11 differentials tested; no such isolate was found in Ecuador.
