The role of van der Waals interactions on wetting and adhesion in metal carbon systems

The role of van der Waals interaction (vdW) on wetting and adhesion of Cu and Au on carbon substrates under high vacuum was studied. Wetting experiments were performed by the dispensed drop variante of the sessile drop method in a high vacuum metallic furnace. The metals were found to wet monocrystalline graphite better than the vitreous carbon, with the corresponding differences in work of adhesion being 50 to 60%. The van der Waals interactions at the surface were due to dispersion forces. For non-reactive metal/carbon systems, wetting and adhesion of a metal varied only slightly around its melting point.
