Colonoscopy has developed over the past 35 years as a sophisticated minimally invasive tool, allowing for diagnosis and therapy of multiple disconcerting and life-threatening conditions with minimal morbidity. Future directions include improved preparations, faster screening tools, additional therapeutic interventions, determination of the role and frequency of surveillance, and advancement of technology in this area. Although colonoscopy may some day be replaced as a screening or diagnostic tool, its role in therapy continues to evolve.
