Safety requirement and regulations on fi-re and ventilation for tunnels in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. (HKSAR, formerly HongKong) are reviewed. Both vehicular and railway tunnels are considered. Vehicle emissions are important for vehicular tunnels and so discussions on carbon monoxide from petrol engines and particulates from diesel engines are reported. Better environmental control on air temperature, air velocity and air pressure are also discussed. Problems to be considered for future tunnel design along these two areas are identified.
