A simple theory, based on vacuum conductance, is used to evaluate the effusion of particles in targets for the production of radioactive ions by high energy proton bombardment. Some general conclusions are drawn and a comparison made with Monte Carlo computer calculations and the results of the RIST target tests at ISOLDE,
