摘要
It has been known for some time that the present practice of sewer design based on self-cleansing velocities is inadequate in certain circumstances, To overcome this a standardized design procedure has been developed. This paper is the first of two and deals with the background issues concerned particularly with sediment transport in sewers. Sediment sources, quantities and characteristics are reported, and sediment movement in sewers discussed. The effects of the flow-sediment regime are described. Equations for erosion, suspension and bedload sediment transport are compared and those suitable for sewer design proposed. It is concluded that more economic sewer designs can be produced by allowing the limited formation of a sediment bed.
