Self-assembly of perylene monoimide (PMI) substituted hexa-peri- hexabenzocoronenes (HBC), and the self-assembly properties of dyads and triads, are discussed. dyads and triads obtained by covalently connecting a strong electron donor with one or two acceptors through a single C-C bond exhibit interesting self-assembly properties both in the bulk and at surfaces. X-ray diffraction study of the bulk revealed a columnar structure where the non-planar A-D-A units are assembled into parallel pathways. The supramolecular structure of PMI-HBC-PMI appears to be a very good candidate for performing studies both 3D bulk and in 2D monolayers by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).
