Model A5B1 heteroarm star copolymers comprising poly(ethylene oxide) and polystyrene were synthesized by living radical polymerization using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-supported cyclotriphosphazene. In the presence of 4-pentachlorocyclotriphosphazoxyl-TEMPO, the polymerization was fast although the polymers obtained had broad polydispersity. 4-Pentamethoxycyclotriphosphazoxyl-TEMPO and 4-penta[oligo(oxyethylene)]cyclotriphosphazoxyl-TEMPO gave polymers with narrow polydispersity. The polymers were obtained in quantitative efficiency, with the molecular weight in proportion to conversion and reciprocal of the initial concentration of the counter radicals.
