Model-based controller design gives an insight into dynamic system behavior, and eliminates excessive reliance on the trial and error adjustments of controller parameters. A closed-loop speed controller for the inertia phase of the gearshift in an automatic transmission is designed here, based on a reduced order linear model of the transmission response extracted from a complex nonlinear dynamic simulation. The controller performance is then verified using the nonlinear simulation. Modification of hardware design to improve system responsiveness is also discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
