摘要
Each year a strong honey bee hive will divide with one group leaving to form a new hive and the other staying behind at the old hive. How a swarm of bees numbering perhaps 10,000 individuals can make a collective decision regarding their new nest location gives valuable insights into group decision making. The process is not based on achieving a consensus as had been suggested, that is not all the members need to agree on the new site, rather it is based on achieving a quorum. A quorum is reached when the number of scouts at a particular rises above a certain figure, this site is then chosen. Furthermore it has been discovered that this methods results in bees having an almost perfect record in picking the best site. Something that may help humans improve their collective decision making.
