A novel synthesis method for preparing nanocrystalline SnO2 powders by means of a nitrate-citrate gel-combustion process is presented. SnO2 powders with an average crystallite size of 10nm were obtained. The influence of ignition temperature, fuel content in the precursor mixture and calcination temperature on the characteristics of the powders was studied. Crystallite sizes were determined by XRD. Specific surface areas were measured by BET method and particle sizes calculated from these values were in the range 20-35nm. The morphology of these nanostructured powders was analyzed by SEM and FTIR. Different combustion routes have been used to prepare several oxides, but the synthesis of SnO2 by this method has not been reported before. (C) 1999 Acta Metallurgica Inc.
