Cationic distributions in the binary oxide spinels M-x-Co-3-O-x(4) (M=Mg, Cu, Zn, Ni)

Results from a neutron diffraction investigation of the structure of solid-state spinel solutions MxCo3-xO4(M = Cu,Mg,Zn,Ni) obtained by thermal decomposition of hydroxide nitrate precursors are presented. In the case of CuxCo3-xO4 a statistical distribution of Cu2+ among tetrahedral and octahedral sites is established, which explains the absence of macroscopic Jahn-Teller distortion of the lattice. The site preference seems to be the major factor determining the cation arrangement in all the other cobaltites. The Mg and Ni ions manifest their known preference to enter the octahedral sites and the Zn ions their preference to the tetrahedral sites. The variation of the interatomic distances with composition is consistent with the cationic distributions found.
