On the Competitive Growth of Alpha and Transient Aluminas During the First Stages of Thermal Oxidation of FeCrAl Alloys at Intermediate Temperatures

An oxide film formed during the initial stages of FeCrAl oxidation in the temperature range of transient-scale formation was characterized. Oxidation tests were performed on Aluchrom YHfAI, a grade from Thyssen Krupp VDM. Alloy foil thickness was 50μm and sample dimensions were kept at 15 × 30 mm 2. Oxidation kinetics were recorded in a SETARAM microbalance, under flowing Ar + 15% O 2 between 875 and 970°C. Gravimetric measurements showed the non-monotonic behavior of FeCrAl oxidation as a function of temperature, a classical observation due to the competition between more or less protective alumina phases. The curves also confirmed the sudden change in oxidation kinetics after a few hours of oxidation. The results of XRD spectra showed that the ratio of transient-to-alpha peak amplitudes was zero at 30 minutes after the beginning of oxidation, a time where only z-alumina was detected.
