Illumination of iron-doped lithium crystals (LiNbO3:Fe) with femtosecond pulses of 1.5 mu m wavelength results in large refractive index changes Delta n in the order of 10(-3). The sign of the refractive index changes depends on the polarization of the recording light. The results can be very useful for fabrication of tailored holographic components for telecommunication.
