How UML is used

Charateristic features and components used in system analysis of Unified Modeling Language (UML) are discussed. A survey conducted with the support of OMG Web page attracted 171 usable responses from analysts using UML and another 11 from those using UML components as part of another OO methodology. The results show that clients are most likely to be involved in developing, reviewing, and approving the the Use Case Narratives and associated Use Case Diagram. Client involvement levels across the remaining components during development seem higher than what expected from the literature. It is felt that UML should not only be considered exclusively as a language for software professionals, but also a greater understanding of UML diagrams and their roles in building systems is needed throughout the organizations. More extensive education programs are needed to increase the number of analysts familiar with UML and provide support to make full use of its capabilities.
