Effect of particle shape on the IR reflectance spectra of pressed powders of anisotropic materials

The reflectance spectra of compact aggregates made of optically-uniaxial microparticles substantially change with the axial ratio of the particles. The variations in the spectra were successfully explained by an effective medium approximation, through which the infrared reflectance spectra could be calculated for pressed aggregates of spheroidal particles of different shapes, in which the optic axis is parallel to the axis of revolution. The experimental check was carried out on the anisotropic material, α-Fe2O3, with reasonably good agreement for several shapes studied.
