Influence of changing peripheral geometry on electrical impedance tomography measurements

Changes in the peripheral geometry of the cross-section of the object under investigation have been observed during electrical impedance tomography (EIT) measurements. An experiment was conducted to gain a better insight into the impact of an altered external shape on the generated EIT image. The experiment used a cylindrical tank filled with a saline solution. EIT measurements were performed with a multi-frequency tomograph, applying a frequency of 5 kHz. The tank cross-section was progressively deformed elliptically, applying a corresponding radial force on the shell of the elastic tank. Changes in impedance values were found to not only depend on the deformation exerted, but also on the properties of the algorithm used for image reconstruction.
